Do you complete your work only on deadlines ?
Do you feels frustrated after completing your work ?
And due to frustration and deadline pressure you submit your work or upload it on the internet before reviewing ? Then my friend you NEED TO STOP it !! Why ? Let me tell you
Why to Review
I was at the very same spot that you are and I'm still kind of at it.
But the best thing is that I realized my mistake and now I'm gonna tell you what you are doing wrong.
When we are doing any kind of work it can be writing, photo/video editing, anything; our brain is occupied in building that one specific thing from 0 to 100.
Our main goal is to complete it anyhow:
our goal is to convey the idea through writing.
our goal is to enhance a photo.
our goal is to merge the video clips in a sequence and add effects.
But while doing all of this we don't care about the small stuff like:
is the idea being repeated, are the words too complex, is it easy to read, etc.
am I working on the wrong layer, have I named the layers, do I have a checkpoint in case I mess up, etc.
are there too many effects, is the content repetitive, is this really necessary here, is the timeline too messy, etc.
Our brain chooses not to focus on such trivial things and just to get the job done.
But we tend to forget that:
These little things are the ones that compound and makes the user experience smooth.
So I guess till now you are convinced that Yes ! We need to review our work
And I'm pretty sure you must be thinking Okay then! as soon as I finish my work, I'll take a look at it and do the necessary changes.
But that too won't work.
Okay Calm Down, don't be mad on me, also don't worry. I'll tell you Why it won't work and also What is the proper method to review your work.
How to Review
Reviewing just after completing doesn't work because as I told earlier our Brain is busy and also tired after doing the work.
It is also in a zone where it has just completed the work, therefore knows what it has done and therefore doesn't pay attention to the details or should I say mistakes.
Because in our brain does not make mistakes, it's our hands that makes mistake. That's why our eyes tends to overlook them.
So the best way to review is:
Stand up, go take a break, do something fun.
Come back after minimum 5-10 mins.
Change your environment(if possible) i.e. move away from the place where you work
now read, see, watch your work for review.
If you write then you can try changing the font, color, size and revert to original after the review.
Yeah! so that's it from my side for today.
Tomorrow I'll be sharing 3 personal things that made me realize that why reviewing my work is important, the link will be updated here.
